Statue of Liberty Early Concept -
"Egypt Carrying the Light to Asia"
Egypt Carrying the Light to Asia by Frederic Auguste Bartholdi was designed in the 1860s. It was designed to be positioned in the entryway of the Suez Canal in Egypt. Intended to stand at 86 feet, the proposed statues was ultimately declined due to the expensive costs involved.

Barholdi's Original Design
Bartholdi was impressed with the Egyptian statues at Abu Simbel, Egypt. He came up with the iconic image after researching the ancient Colossus of Rhodes. His design features a large bronze figure of a Muslim woman. Eventually, his design changed for the Statue of Liberty, but some details remained the same.
